George "Chocolate" Perry
A bass player, a native of Hollywood, Florida, song writer, and producer, George “Chocolate” Perry, has more than 3 decades of experience. He has played and toured with such well known bands as Steven Stills; Crosby Stills and Nash; The Bee Gees; Joe Walsh; Stevie Nix, and many others. George is professionally known as “Chocolate” and very well known in the music industry.
He started his musical career as a bass player at the age of 16 with local bands. By the time his 18th birthday rolled around he knew this was the life that he would grow to love. It was easy for him to play all types of music. Learning the man and varied aspects of music while growing up in and around studios added to his love of music. The art of song writing and producing as well as learning how studios work became the thing to do.
In 1977, writer, Barbara Charone, wrote about The 1977 Crosby, Stills and Nash reunion Tour: “After all the abortive reunion efforts, Crosby, Stills and Nash have finally delivered the goods, backed by the best rhythm section CS&N has ever toured with bassist, George “Chocolate” Perry and drummer, Joe Vitale, made every number rhythmically better”. Chocolate, along with touring with CS&N, has played on such Crosby, Stills and Nash’s albums as: “Daylight Again” and “Crosby, Stills, Nash and Sometimes Young”, among others.
Working with such great artist as Benny Latimore; Marcia; Timmy Thomas; Raw Soul Express; Betty Wright; Little Beaver; George McCrae; Gwen McCrae; KC and the Sunshine Band; King Sporty and Clarence Reid, has been a major highlight of his life.
Commercials for McArthur Milk and Coca Cola early in his career only added to his experience, and would play a major role later.
By the age of 19, he started writing and producing, these lead him to Bobby Caldwell. They produced and wrote songs on three albums of The Blue Notes. Chocolate went on to play on Bobby Caldwell’s future album; “What You Won’t Do For Love”, “Bobby Caldwell 1978”, and the “Carry On” album in 1982.
At this time his career was gaining speed. He started playing other types of music, and building his musical abilities. Playing for bands from around the country enhanced his skills. Touring with Steven Stills; Andy Gibb; Crosby, Stills and Nash; Samantha Sang, and Joe Walsh for 3 years really was an enhancement to his love of music. Two Live Crew dance; Don Felder; The Eagles and many more, which he still records for now. Some for 20 years or more. The Bee Gees for 15 years, including their “One for All” World Tour in 1989.
Chocolate played on albums for artist such as: John Cougar; Dionne Warwick; Gloria Estefan; John Sacatacks; Erick Carmen; Al Kooper and Dolly Parton.
Chocolate also played on Andy Gibb’s album “Shadow Dancing-Andy Gibb 1977-1978.
Chocolate’s resume is extensive, playing with Joe Walsh on Joe’s Albums: “Barnstorm”; “So far so Good”; “There Goes the Neighborhood 1981”; “Best of” in 1978 and “But Seriously Folks” in 1978.
Chocolate played on John Cougar’s, “Best That I Can Do 1978-1988” album and his 1982 “American Fool” album.
Stephen Stills had the very talented Chocolate play on his albums; “Stephen Stills / Illegal Stills” and “Throughfare Gap” they still get together to play and work on future albums.
In 1977, Chocolate produced The BlueNotes album, “Truth Has To Come To Light”, at TK Records in Miami, Florida. Choolate, Bernard and Angela Staton, have played Gospel music along with master blues harp accompanist Michael “Doe” Palecki, at the Mount Temple Missionary Baptist Church in Miami’s Liberty City. Palecki says, “I’m blessed to have played with some of America’s best musician and each time they’ve passed on a little magic that I try to incorporate into my performance”.
Chocolate’s career also includes Movie Sound Tracks with Urban Cowboy by Paramount pictures, Amazing Grace and Chuck Tri-Star. Tri-Entertain Partners and Commercials for the Florida Lotto.
Chocolate, was seen on such TV shows also appeared on TV shows such as: SCT TV; Arsenio Hall; American Bandstand; MTV and VH1. Chocolate has appeared on television shows in Australia and Europe.
To this day Chocolate is considered one of the best session musicians in the music business and continues to work in recording industry, bringing years of talent and experience and ideas to those he works and plays with.
When not in a studio working with other musicians recently Michael Jackson, you will find Chocolate in his home studio, working on his own music and business ventures, producing, writing and working with young talent, trying to get a start in the business.
